Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis
  • Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disorder where (in the majority) antibodies are mediated against the acetylcholine receptors in the neuromuscular junction
  • Thus reduced action potentials generated in muscles are reduced causing weakness
  • Myasthenia can be either generalised as is with Laura or purely involving the eyes
  • It affects younger patients (age 20-30, females more common) as well as older patients (60-70, males more common)
  • It can be worsened by infection or certain drugs such as aminoglycosides, quinolones, quinine
