Central and Mixed Sleep Apnoea 1

  • Unlike OSA, Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA) is not caused by pharyngeal constriction or blockage, but by a reduced respiratory drive during sleep
  • Cheyne Stokes Breathing (an episodic pattern of deeper/faster breaths followed by a period of not breathing – ie apnoea) is a type of CSA
  • Primary CSA is very rare
  • Secondary CSA is as a result of an underlying pathology
  • Common causes of secondary CSA include severe left ventricular disruption, opioid use and stroke
