Central and Mixed Sleep Apnoea 1
Unlike OSA, Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA) is not caused by pharyngeal constriction or blockage, but by a reduced respiratory drive during sleep
Cheyne Stokes Breathing (an episodic pattern of deeper/faster breaths followed by a period of not breathing – ie apnoea) is a type of CSA
Primary CSA is very rare
Secondary CSA is as a result of an underlying pathology
Common causes of secondary CSA include severe left ventricular disruption, opioid use and stroke
