Mechanism
Monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) breaks down dopamine secreted by neurones and is predominantly found in dopamine containing regions on the central nervous system. By inhibiting it, there is an increase in dopamine in the basal ganglia.

MAO-B inhibitors are specific and patients do not get the same side effects as they do with antidepressant non-selective MAO inhibitors.
