Cautions
Mechanism
Antacids work to neutralise stomach acid by the active ingredient (base) reacting with stomach acid.
Alginates work by creating an algae float, ie a pH neutral barrier between stomach acid and the oesophageal opening to the stomach to prevent reflux episodes. This effect is non-systemic therefore causing fewer side effects.
Administration
Oral – tablet, liquid, sachets.
Adverse Reactions

Interactions
Antacids containing Calcium Carbonate can reduce the absorption of several common medicines such as levothyroxine, alendronic acid, iron supplements and ciprofloxacin.
Increased risk of hypercalcaemia occurs when taken with Bendroflumethiazide.
