Mechanism
Arachis oil is a mixture of peanut and ground-nut oil. It is given as an enema in patients with faecal impaction. It works in two ways. It softens the stool and acts as a lubricant.
Administration
- Docusate Sodium – Oral or Rectal
- Arachis Oil - Rectal -– enema
- Liquid Paraffin - Oral
Adverse Reactions
- Anaphylaxis - can occur due to nut allergy.
- Anal irritation can occur with liquid paraffin.
Interactions
No relevant interactions.
Education
- Liquid Paraffin should not be taken before bed.
- Docusate given ORALLY takes 1-2 days to achieve effect, RECTAL response occurs within around 20 minutes.
