Knee Bursa

The Knee is one of the most common sites or bursitis and its often the most confusing as it can present similar to septic arthritis.

There are 14 bursa of the knee but today we will only be focusing on a few:

Suprapatellar:

  • Supra (Above) and Patellar (No points for guessing that one)
  • On palpation there will be pain above the patellar, be careful as in overweight and obese individuals it maybe harder to palpate the patellar in the first place.

Repatellar:

  • Very common, often referred to as 'housemaids knee'. Presents as a fairly obvious swelling like an apple on the knee, most patients will have a reduced Range of Motion and may have localised redness

Infrapatellar and Pes Anserine Bursa:

  • Infero-lateral localised pain and redness, patients are often present similarly to the above two: Pain, reduced movements and localised swelling/redness.
