The innate immune system is a fast, non-specific initial response to any foreign invader. It steps in if pathogens are able to 'break in' past the physical and chemical barriers that protect the body from harm. It has originated from an old evolutionary response system, and is composed of a group of cells, molecules, receptors and processes.
