Aetiology

Osteomyelitis is typically caused by the haematogenous spread of infection, especially in non-diabetic and Intravenous Drug Use patients.

Direct inoculation is a possibility especially in the diabetic and trauma patient categories where open wounds can be contaminated.

Contagious foci of infection is rarer however may be seen in austere environments or in chaotic individuals where there is a delayed presentation to healthcare.

Osteomyelitis may be present post-operatively and can be focused around implants or reconstructive devices, most common mode of infection in the developed world and one of the most complicated to treat.
