Contamination vs Osteomyelitis

Contamination = Bacteria where it shouldn’t be
Osteomyelitis = Disease process of an Infection of the Bone

One thing to be clear is that contamination is not Osteomyelitis.

Contamination is when a microbe is somewhere it shouldn’t be. An example of this is your dirt covering an open fracture.

Osteomyelitis is a disease process, the details of which we’ll cover later.

One way to think of it is Sars n-cov2 is the virus whereas COVID-19 is the disease process that arises from it.

Not all contamination causes Osteomyelitis and certainly good initial debridement and secondary wound care can prevent it.
