Complications
Systemic
- Acute Renal Failure
- Patients with acute compartment syndrome are at high risk of acute renal failure secondary to
rhabdomyolysis
- Rhabdomyolysis occurs when muscle cell breakdown causes the release of myoglobin, creatine kinase
(CK) and urate into the systemic circulation
- Myoglobin is nephrotoxic and causes damage to the kidneys
- The most specific test for rhabdomyolysis is serum CK level
- 5 times the upper limit of normal indicates rhabdomyolysis
- Start IV fluids early and maintain a high urine output
- Monitor U&Es and CK regularly
