Development of the Transformation Zone
The transformation zone develops when the thin columnar epithelium of the cervical canal becomes exposed to the hostile environment of the vagina.
The normal anatomy of the cervix can be seen here. The cervical canal is lined entirely with columnar epithelium, the change from columnar to squamous occuring just within the cervical os.
