Venturi Mask
The venturi mask is similar to a simple face mask, but the oxygen is delivered through a venturi device.
This device has openings that mix the oxygen with room air at a precise ratio to allow the delivery of precise FiO2.
The venturi barrels have different colours and the FiO2 they deliver as well as the flow rate required is written on the barrel.
Advantages
- Delivers a precise FiO2, which is particularly useful for patients at risk of T2RF
- FiO2 is not dependant on the respiratory rate
Disadvantages
- Can easily be used wrong and require the correct flow rate to function
- Accuracy of the FiO2 is greatly reduced if the mask does not fit well or is placed incorrectly
