Simple Face Mask

The simple face mask sits over mouth and nose and often has a metal clip to fit the mask closer to the nosebridge and rubber bands to keep it in position.

It has openings in the side that allow expired air to exit.

A minimum of 5L/min is required to prevent re-breathing of CO2.

Flow rate: 5 - 10L/min.

FiO2: ~40 - 60%.

(FiO2 is variable since respiratory rate influences how much room air mixes with oxygen)

Advantages

  • Allows higher flow rates
  • Can be more comfortable for some patients
  • Cam be used with nebulisers

Disadvantages

  • Obstructs mouth and vision and needs to be removed to eat / drink
  • Can be claustrophobic
  • Variable FiO2 due to influence of the respiratory rate
