If SpO2 is below 85%
- 15L/min through a non-rebreather mask until O2 saturations have stabilised
If SpO2 is above 85% but below the target range
- Commence 1 - 6L/min through Nasal Cannula
- 5 - 10L/min through Simple Face Mask (if nasal cannula is not tolerated or not effective)

If oxygen is required to maintain target saturations always get blood gases.
No supplemental oxygen is necessary if SpO2 is within target range on room air.

The target saturation range is 88 - 92% or the patient specific range on their oxygen alert card pending blood gas results.
Start with a 24% (blue) or 28% (white) venturi mask, or 1 - 2L through nasal cannula if venturi masks are unavailable.
If the 28% venturi mask is not enough, change to a higher FiO2 barrel or switch to nasal cannula or simple face mask.
If the SpO2 rises above 92%, switch to a low FiO2 barrel or reduce the flow rate through a nasal cannula.
! Assess the need for NIV early, especially if there is a past history of NIV, and get senior support.
