The target saturation range is 88 - 92% or the patient specific range on their oxygen alert card pending blood gas results.
Start with a 24% (blue) or 28% (white) venturi mask, or 1 - 2L through nasal cannula if venturi masks are unavailable.
If the 28% venturi mask is not enough, change to a higher FiO2 barrel or switch to nasal cannula or simple face mask.
If the SpO2 rises above 92%, switch to a low FiO2 barrel or reduce the flow rate through a nasal cannula.
! Assess the need for NIV early, especially if there is a past history of NIV, and get senior support.
