Critically Ill Patients

Start all critically ill patients on 15L/min through a non-rebreather mask (or alternatively a bag-valve mask).

Once reliable pulse oximetry or blood gas results are available this should be titrated down to achieve the target oxygen saturations of 94 - 98%.

For patients at risk of T2RF start at the same flow rate until blood gases are available.

! Hypoxaemia kills faster than Hypercapnia, you can titrate the oxygen down once your patient is stable!

! Oxygenation is reduced when lying down - sitting upright can improve saturations.
