There are many conditions that can cause Type 2 Respiratory Failure. There are 2 main categories that fall into:
Respiratory Pump Failure
Respiratory Pump = Comprised of the chest wall, pulmonary parenchyma, muscles of respiration and the nervous system.
If any of these components stop functioning the way they should, ventilation can be impaired.
Examples:
Increased CO2 Production
Any process that increases CO2 production can cause T2RF if the compensatory increase in ventilation fails.
