Learning Objectives

  • Clarify the indications for supplemental oxygen therapy in hospital adult patients
  • Revise the anatomy, physiology and biochemistry of respiration and gas exchange in health as previously encountered in Year 1 of the MBChB course
  • Examine the effects of hypoxia on the human body in terms of pathophysiology, clinical signs and symptoms
  • Distinguish which patients are at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure and justify a target saturation range to which oxygen therapy should be tailored
  • Select appropriate oxygen delivery devices and propose suitable target oxygen saturation ranges
  • Understand safe oxygen prescribing and effective communication within a multi-professional clinical team
