Pharmacokinetics
A table of the pharmacokinetic properties of the thiazides is available for reference purposes.
Use in the treatment of essential hypertension:
A low dose of a thiazide produces a maximal or near-maximal antihypertensive effect with little or no disturbance of blood chemistry.
Administered early in the day to avoid interference with sleep.
Used alone for mild hypertension.
Used in combination with other types of agent for more severe hypertension.
Particularly useful for elderly patients
Contra-indicated in pregnancy - may prevent the expansion in plasma volume associated with pregnancy and hence reduce placental perfusion. May also cause neonatal thrombocytopenia.
