Antagonists at the AT1 receptor (sartans)

Use of sartans in the treatment of essential hypertension:

May be used alone or in combination with a different class of antihypertensive agent.

Since they do not inhibit the metabolism of bradykinin, they provide a useful alternative in patients who cannot tolerate the dry cough associated with the use of ACE inhibitors.

Contra-indicated in pregnancy and breast feeding.

Caution should be exercised when prescribing sartans for patients with stenosis of a renal artery...
