Sick Day Rules
During times of illness, the body has increased stress without the reserve to cope. Higher steroid doses are required to overcome this:
- Minor short-lived illness: double their dose of steroids
- Vomiting / diarrhoea: IM injection of hydrocortisone
- Major illness/operation:
- 100mg IV Hydrocortisone STAT then 50-100mg IV every 8hrs
- Once the illness has subsided, the dose should be gradually reduced by 50% every day until back to usual dose
