What is Remote and Rural?

A Remote Rural Area is an area with a population of less than 3,000 people, and with a drive time of between 30 and 60 minutes to a Settlement of 10,000 or more1 – seen as the green areas of the picture.

A Very Remote Rural Area is an area with a population of less than 3,000 people, and with a drive time of over 60 minutes to a Settlement of 10,000 or more1 – seen as the yellow area on the picture. We can see this involves a large area of Scotland's land mass!
