Why Do We Care About Remote and Rural Cases?

The purpose of these cases is to outline how we manage patients remote and rural differently due to their location compared to if they lived in a more urban location, whilst also highlighting some essential knowledge for finals!

It is important to remember that just because a patient lives in a remote and rural area of Scotland, this doesn’t mean they don’t have access to high quality, evidence based healthcare. However, their management may be slightly different to how we would treat patients based in an urban setting.

Also, even if you have no interest in working in remote and rural medicine, it is important to remember that no matter where you end up working or what speciality you are in, you will always come across patients who are from remote and rural areas. It is therefore important to understand their patient journey and how it may be different compared to an urban patient, and also how your clinical decisions may affect them differently in the long term.
