By the end of these sessions you should be able to:

Session 1

  • Explain the ultra-structure of the skin and its different layers
  • Describe the different cell populations in the skin and their functions
  • Understand the physiology of the different skin cancers
  • Discuss the different incidence numbers for every skin cancer
  • Link skin cancer to geography and socioeconomic status
  • Identify the components of the ABCDE algorithm
  • Understand UV protection and be able to offer advice on it
  • Understand the clinical aspects of common dermatological conditions using a case study approach
  • Recognise a range of commonly seen dermatological conditions
  • Interpret the clinical history, signs and symptoms of commonly encountered skin conditions to form a presumptive diagnosis
  • Apply the ABCDE rule to determine whether a lesion might be malignant or benign
  • Appraise and assess from a patient's history and photographs whether you would request further information, refer to secondary care, or arrange for a face-to-face appointment
  • Evaluate lesions to ascertain whether they might be benign or malignant

    Session 2 & 3
