Skin Protection from UVA & UVB Light

There are a number of ways in which one can be protected from the harmful effects of UV radiation

  • Wear close weave cotton clothing when in the sun
  • Wear long sleeves and trousers
  • Wear a hat with a wide brim that protects your face and neck
  • Wear sunglasses
  • Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm
  • Do not use sunbeds
  • Use sunscreen

When using sunscreen, make sure you are using one that offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays

The SPF (sun protection filter) shows how much protection the sunscreen is offering against UVB rays only

The higher the SPF the higher the protection against UVB rays

  • SPF 15 filters out 93%
  • SPF 30 filters out 96%
  • SPF 60 filters out 98%

UVA protection is shown either by the words UVA inside a circle or by using a 5-star rating

Receiving five stars in the rating, implies the highest level of UVA protection
