Each breast (mammary gland) consists of 15-20 lobes with the main duct from each lobe converging on the nipple where it opens onto the surface
This main duct is known as the lactiferous duct
The pigmented skin of the areola surrounds the nipple
The lobes of the breast are divided by connective tissue septae which merge with the deep fascia overlying the anterior surface of the pectoralis major muscle
In the non-pregnant (adult female) condition the bulk of the breast is occupied by adipose tissue
As pregnancy progresses the amount of glandular tissue increases and during lactation the bulk of the breast is occupied by glandular tissue secreting milk
In the male and prepubertal female the breast is rudimentary and does not extend beyond the areola
