The perichondrium is the sheath of connective tissue which surrounds plates of hyalin and elastic tissue
A perichondrium is not found in association with articulating (hyalin) cartilage at synovial joints, or in association with fibrocartilage
The outer part of the perichondrium helps to bind the plate of cartilage to adjacent structures
It also contains the blood vessels which supply oxygen and nutrients to the plate of cartilage
As cartilage is avascular, the oxygen and nutrients have to diffuse into the plate of cartilage from the outer perichondrium
This is the main reason why cartilage, if damaged, takes a long time to heal as oxygen and nutrients take a long time to diffuse into large plates of cartilage
Bone on the other hand is very vascular and will heal much quicker than cartilage
The inner part of the perichondrium includes chondrogenic cells and chondroblasts which are important in the growth of the plate of cartilage
