UL2.H2.5 Perichondrium

Perichondrium:

  • The perichondrium is the sheath of connective tissue which surrounds plates of hyalin and elastic tissue
  • A perichondrium is not found in association with articulating (hyalin) cartilage at synovial joints, or in association with fibrocartilage
  • The outer part of the perichondrium helps to bind the plate of cartilage to adjacent structures
  • It also contains the blood vessels which supply oxygen and nutrients to the plate of cartilage
  • As cartilage is avascular, the oxygen and nutrients have to diffuse into the plate of cartilage from the outer perichondrium
  • This is the main reason why cartilage, if damaged, takes a long time to heal as oxygen and nutrients take a long time to diffuse into large plates of cartilage
  • Bone on the other hand is very vascular and will heal much quicker than cartilage
  • The inner part of the perichondrium includes chondrogenic cells and chondroblasts which are important in the growth of the plate of cartilage
