Histology is the branch of anatomy which is concerned with the study of cells, and tissue organisation
It is sometimes referred to as microscopical anatomy, as routinely, histological examination of tissue is carried out by examining thin slices, or sections, of tissue in a microscope
Gross anatomy will assist in defining the gross structure and distribution of body parts but does little to assist in determining how those parts function
Histology lies at the interface between gross anatomy, physiology and molecular biology in contributing to how the normal body is put together physically but, also, how it functions as a whole and in its component parts
