The Primordial and Primary Ovarian Follicles:
- At birth, the ovary contains primordial follicles
- These can be described as small follicles with an oocyte surrounded by a single layer of squamous follicular cells
- Some primordial follicles begin to develop further from soon after birth
- Follicles which show signs of an increase in size of the oocyte and are surrounded by a single layer of cuboidal or columnar follicular cells are described as primary follicles
