PP2.H2.4 Ovarian Follicles 1

Ovarian Follicles 1:

  • Ovarian follicles consist of an oocyte surrounded by follicular cells
  • At birth there are around 1 million follicles in each ovary
  • In these follicles the oocyte is arrested at prophase of the first meiotic division
  • It will remain in prophase of the first meiotic division until the time it is released from a mature follicle (perhaps 40 years or more)
  • By puberty this number of follicles has been reduced by about half
  • During the reproductive phase a women may mature about 400-500 follicles and release that number of ova ready to be fertilised
  • The remaining follicles fail to mature fully and break down: they become atretic

Question:

    What happens during meiosis?
