PP2.H1.8 +D1 The Ductus Deferens and The Ejaculatory Duct
The Ductus Deferens and The Ejaculatory Duct:
The ductus deferens is lined by a pseudostratified columnar epithelium with stereocilia (as the epididymis)
It has a thick muscular wall (relative to the diameter of the lumen)
The ductus deferens acts as a store for spermatozoa
The muscle wall consists of three layers of smooth muscle
The middle layer (the thickest layer) is circular and the inner and outer layers longitudinal
These muscle cells are extensively innervated with sympathetic nerves which allows for strong co-ordinated peristaltic contractions during ejaculation
The ejaculatory duct is the continuation of the ductus deferens, from the point of connection with the duct of the seminal vesicle, through the substance of the prostate, to the connection with the urethra
The structure (and function) of the ejaculatory duct is the same as the ductus deferens
