Interstitial cells of Leydig are found in the lobules of the testis and lying in the connective tissue between seminiferous tubules
They are located in small groups around the blood vessels that lie in the interstitial space and which will be carrying blood to the seminiferous tubules
The Interstitial cells of Leydig produce the steroid hormone testosterone
This acts on the seminiferous tubules to promote spermatogenesis
It also acts on the accessory glands of the male genital system to promote their secretions as well as having androgenic effects on other tissues
The Interstitial cells of Leydig contain much lipid and smooth endoplasmic reticulum as is characteristic of steroid hormone producing cells
