PP1.H1.7 +D1 Collecting Ducts and the Renal Pelvis
Collecting Ducts & the Renal Pelvis:
Collecting ducts receive the forming urine from the distal convoluted tubules in the kidney cortex
They pass through the medulla and empty the urine into the renal pelvis
Collecting ducts, unlike the nephrons, merge to form progressively larger ducts so that only a small number drain into the renal pelvis
The collecting ducts are lined by a simple columnar epithelium
The renal pelvis is a funnel like structure
It receives urine from the collecting ducts
At the hilus of the kidney it connects with the proximal end of the ureter
It plays no part in the formation of urine and is lined by transitional epithelium - the epithelium characteristic of the parts of the urinary system which carries/stores the formed urine
