PP1.H1.7 +D1 Collecting Ducts and the Renal Pelvis

Collecting Ducts & the Renal Pelvis:

  • Collecting ducts receive the forming urine from the distal convoluted tubules in the kidney cortex
  • They pass through the medulla and empty the urine into the renal pelvis
  • Collecting ducts, unlike the nephrons, merge to form progressively larger ducts so that only a small number drain into the renal pelvis
  • The collecting ducts are lined by a simple columnar epithelium
  • The renal pelvis is a funnel like structure
  • It receives urine from the collecting ducts
  • At the hilus of the kidney it connects with the proximal end of the ureter
  • It plays no part in the formation of urine and is lined by transitional epithelium - the epithelium characteristic of the parts of the urinary system which carries/stores the formed urine
