Each nephron is involved in the filtration of the blood, excretion of waste products and excess fluid and resorption of non-waste materials including water
Each nephron consists of a blind-ended tubule which can be divided into the following parts:
Renal corpuscle
Proximal convoluted tubule
Loop of Henle
Distal convoluted tubule
The distal convoluted tubule delivers urine into collecting ducts
Collecting ducts are continuous with the nephron but have a different embryological origin
They do not participate in the formation of the urine but are involved with the resorption of water and hence the concentration of urine that is passed out of the kidney
In the main, the renal corpuscle, proximal convoluted tubule and distal convoluted tubule are located in the cortex of the kidney
The loop of Henle and the collecting duct are located in the medulla of the kidney
