Myelofibrosis

Myelofibrosis has a similar pattern of mutations to Essential Thrombocythaemia but other features are present, notably a leucoerythroblastic blood film and splenomegaly.

Leucoerythroblastic Blood Film

This describes the presence of red cell and white cell precursors that are normally found in the bone marrow appearing in the peripheral blood. A leucoerythroblastic blood film is seen in bone marrow infiltration of any cause (fibrosis in MF, other malignancies often prostate and breast carcinoma) or in severe bone marrow stress e.g. massive haemorrhage, severe sepsis. Teardrop poikilocytes are seen in any cause of bone marrow fibrosis, which can occur due to infiltration by any haematopoietic or non-haematopoietic malignancy.
