IT Advice & Gathering Data

Questionnaires

If the project involves collecting numerical or semi-quantitative data, gathering it into an optimal format may save hours of work.

If you plan to use a questionnaire, it is recommended that one that is already validated in the literature is used and referenced. Generic forms are available for patient satisfaction studies, acceptability of treatment, etc, on the web. If the project requires a new design of questionnaire, as much as possible might usefully be done before in advance. Questionnaire design and testing could easily take up a significant part of the block and so jeopardise the opportunity to collect data. To format a questionnaire optimal software should be used and this will also make data collection and analysis easier.

If you require guidance on the statistics the Medical Statistics Group may be able to provide advice  https://www.abdn.ac.uk/iahs/research/medical-statistics/index.php

You can visit the daily student statistical clinic, anytime between 1pm and 2pm in Polwarth 1.026, no appointment required.

This can be with general statistical queries or queries about projects, preferably as early as possible to ensure you collect the right data.

In all instances you must discuss any advice on IT or data collection prior to leaving on elective as this cannot be done remotely.
