At the University of Aberdeen our medicine students undertake an elective during their final year. This can be in a location and on a topic of their own choice including medicine within the wider context of societies at an approved host institute. The project can be carried out in the North of Scotland (including Aberdeen and Inverness), other parts of the UK or abroad. The choice of location is the students although the University may advise, sometimes strongly, against electives in unsettled parts of the world or where student safety is an issue.

Each student will be given a set 8 week period to undertake this project (including travel). The elective period of study is a compulsory component of the final year. It requires students to plan, carry out and evaluate a research project in an area of particular interest to them. All project proposals are approved by the Committee of Advisors on Electives to the School of Medicine & Dentistry prior to commencement of the elective. A report must be submitted by the student on completion, and is assessed in the same manner as all other final year degree assessments. A pass must be obtained in order to be eligible to graduate.
