Thirty international scholars from disciplines ranging from politics and literature to architecture and dance met at UoA for the Interdisicplinary Arendt Conference in August
International scholars from disciplines ranging from politics and literature to architecture and dance met at UoA for four days of panel discussions and public lectures at the Interdisciplinary Arendt Conference in August. Keynote speakers included Professors Juliet Hooker, Ronald Beiner, Sharon Achinstein and Kathryn Belle. All events were well attended by local scholars and members of the public. The conference was organised by Dr Helen Lynch ( LLMVC), Professor Michael Brown (DHPA), Dr Hanifi Baris (CISRUL) and Kirsty Lawie (WayWORD Festival). Delegates were full of praise for the hospitality, the quality of the contributions, and the vibrancy of the discussions of Arendt's ideas. All have expressed the wish for further collaboration and a publication based on selected papers will be forthcoming. The conference raised awareness of the two semesters Hannah Arendt spent in Aberdeen in 1972-3 and 1973-4 and a highlight of the conference was a visit to Fraser Noble 3, where one series of her Gifford Lectures was delivered. Steps are underway for a commemorative plaque and a renaming of the lecture theatre to mark the University's connection with this influential thinker, whose work is important across such diverse fields of study.
