Co-Labs

What are Co-Labs?

Our purpose built 'Co-Labs' are a new kind of library space specifically designed for group work, such as presentations. They offer new ways of engaging with other learners to exchange ideas, enabling you to work together more effectively on all kinds of collaborative academic projects.

What's in them?

Co-Labs have built-in information technology facilities to allow you to use a range of digital media. They include a PC, a plasma screen for viewing DVDs or online content, and multiple ports for headphones. They have seating space for between four and seven people.

Where are they?

There are Co-Labs on Floors 3, 4, 5 and 6 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library. These are arranged in clusters of four, giving 16 of these spaces in total. Turn to the right as you come out of the public lift: they are located in the north-west corner on each floor.

Reader Carrel

The Reader Carrel on Floor 3 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library is reserved for use by users with disabilities - such as mobility, sight, or physical impairments.

The carrel contains a height adjustable desk. The carrel is particularly useful for readers who:

  • may wish to limit the need to carry books and other equipment around during a visit to the library
  • want to work with a note-taker or similar assistant, or
  • may prefer not to work in open spaces.

Height adjustable desks are also available on the open areas on Floors 1 to 7, and on the Lower Ground Floor.

Flexible Learning Area

The Flexible Learning Area is an open space on Floor 7 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library. It has comfortable chairs, large and small tables and two PCs with large plasma screens. Students can adapt this space to their own needs and purposes- for group work, for example.

Break Out Room

Situated on Floor 7 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library building, the Break Out Room is a large, open and comfortable space with soft seating and low level tables. It is ideal for individual reading, quiet working on your laptop (using the wireless network), for short conversational working and other similar uses.

Teaching Resource Collection

The Teaching Resource Collection or TRC is an area for quiet educational study and group discussion on Floor 6 of the Sir Duncan Rice Library.

The Teaching Resource is a collection of more than 20,000 items consisting of children's books and school textbooks for all ages, ranging from pre-school to sixth year secondary level. We have many books which can be used for project or topic work in the primary school, subject specific material for secondary use, as well as a collection of children's fiction. There are subject guides and arrangements for secondary subjects. We also hold a large collection of non-book material including kits (collections of materials on a particular topic, for example we have an inflatable solar system for demonstration purposes, Heinemann Maths packs - teacher and pupil books, workbooks etc., puppets, an organ apron and much more!), DVDs (and videos), CDs, CD-ROMs, project journals (shelved on Floor 2 at 370 with the other Education journals), big books and dual language books.

More information: details about the collection can be found in the Library Guide Teaching Resource Collection: How to Find Education Resources
