More about the exhibition:
A contemporary of Wilson’s once described early urban photography as creating “cities of ghosts”. Long exposure times were required in early photography and figures that passed across the frame while the camera shutter was open were later revealed as blurred traces of movement. Wilson was among the first to make technical improvements in this area. In his photographs we can see the faces of many of the city dwellers, but a double-exposure effect also created ghostly figures in an otherwise pin-sharp cityscape. These technical “imperfections” nevertheless evoke the peculiar nature of cities as places in which the human element is transient in contrast to the enduring solidity of the built environment. There is arguably no more solidly mineral an environment than the granite of Aberdeen’s streets and buildings.
