Thomas Hood's 'The Progress of Cant' and the Art of Advertising in the 1820s
As part of a project exploring publishing practices in the Romantic period, Professor Duff looks at the marketing of books and the world of visual culture in the early nineteenth century. In this context, he will also examine Thomas Hood’s cartoon ‘The Progress of Cant’ (1824) purchased for the University with funds donated by the Friends of the Library, and showing how the comedy in this very rare drawing reveals an age surprisingly like our own.
