It is said by some that a botanic garden is a 'zoo for plants'. As part of the Friends of Aberdeen University Library series of evening talks, Mark Paterson will expand on the origins of western botanic gardens to counter such a sentiment, while extensively highlighting the modern role of a botanic garden.
The ongoing need for opportunities to expand horticultural and botanic training in the UK will be discussed and taxonomy and systematics will be demonstrated as crucial skills for plant conservation. Correspondingly, the role of Herbaria will be shown, in the acknowledgement a dead plant can be a vital resource.
