Did you know that there is a significant collection of objects and photos from the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu here in Aberdeen? Join us for a tea break with a difference when we chat to Eve Haddow about her research.

In the 1890s, Fred Bowie and his wife Jeannie travelled to the Pacific from Aberdeen to start a life as Presbyterian Church missionaries. The couple were stationed in Vanuatu, at that time known as the New Hebrides, until their deaths in the 1930s. As well as seeking to influence the daily lives of the people they met through conversion to Christianity, the Bowies collected objects, took photographs, and recorded stories, which have been held in the University of Aberdeen Museums collection for almost a century. This talk presents research exploring these collections, considering narratives behind the collecting transactions, the people in Vanuatu to whom they are connected, and the legacy of this material today.

Eve Haddow is a Lecturer in Museum Studies at the University of Queensland and a Research Assistant on the Australian Research Council funded project ‘Archaeology, collections and Australian South Sea Islander lived identities’.
