A collaborative exhibition using our historic collections to explore places in the landscape and links across the Northeast
Community volunteers from the Bailies of Bennachie have joined with University researchers to explore rich archival documents dating back to the fifteenth century.
The three featured manuscripts, each from a different family collection held by the Special Collections Centre, date from 1424, 1662 and 1709. The place names appearing in them, and their representation in the landscape via maps and modern photographs, draw these precious sources together.
Discovering the Archives highlights the potential of this investigation, which is part of the Bennachie Landscapes 2012 Summer Events Series . The Bennachie Landscapes initiative draws together the Bailies and University staff and students from Archaeology, History, Anthropology, Education, Music, and Special Collections and Museums. They hope their work – which is funded by a grant of £20K from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) – will result in an exciting new heritage project for the hill and its surrounding landscape.
Each featured document tells its own story about its time of origin, and places in the landscape of the Northeast, centred on Bennachie but reaching from Formartine to the Mearns. The viewer will be able to observe the process of discovery at work here, and the rich potential of these collections to tell a story of the Northeast, and of the nation and links beyond.
