Not many staff or students remember that the Taylor Library sign was stolen from the landing of Taylor Building Block C almost a decade ago. It was originally displayed next to the main entrance on Floor 1.
This morning, a parcel has arrived at the Reception of the School of Law containing the original stolen Taylor Library sign. There was also a short message attached to the sign serving as an explanation and an excuse at the same time for the act. It reads: “Sorry – An over excited undergraduate”.
Prof Greg Gordon, the Head of the School of Law has shared a story with us about ‘The Cloche Boys’ comparing their act to the student who took our library sign many years ago. As to Greg’s account, in 1953, there was a group of students at the University of Aberdeen who decided to steal the library bell as a prank. “The bell was used at the time to signal the closing of the library each evening, an annoying grievance for students studying into the night.” If you interested in their story, please read the post entitled A Dastardly Deed here.
We were pleasantly surprised by seeing our old library sign back again. As Ms Nicola Will the Site Services Manager of Taylor Library recalls: “We normally receive very overdue books in the post but today was a first at Taylor Library. An “over excited undergrad” posted back the name plate that was previously outside the library. It had disappeared a few years ago and has long since been replaced but we were delighted and somewhat bemused to get it back!“
