Legal aspects of oil spills from petroleum installations in the Arctic. The case of the Barents Sea.
Abstract
International regulation of compensation for petroleum spills from offshore rigs and installations is lacking. The consequence of an petroleum spill in the Arctic from offshore rigs and installations then depends on various countries' regulation of the topic in domestic law. That said, large and medium petroleum spills can lead to cross-border pollution damage between Arctic States. This presentation examines the consequence and result of a petroleum spill in the Barents Sea and the effect of such a spill on the compensation of likely injured parties, who may find themselves trapped in a collision between Norwegian and Russian law.
