"Just stories? Evidence, truth and narrative"
Professor Donald Nicolson from Strathclyde University will speak on "Just stories? Evidence, truth and narrative", as part of the Law School's research seminar series 2013-14.
The seminar looks at the implications for the theories of truth in fact-finding in law of the dominant role of narrative in human cognition. It will thus first explore debates about what we mean by "truth" and the extent to which it is regarded as achievable. Subsequently, it will look at the extent to which stories play a role in both the acquiring, remembering and recalling of facts by witnesses, on the one hand, and the evaluation of their testimony by fact adjudicators, on the other hand, and at the implications of these findings for theories of truth.
