University of Aberdeen Launches Online and Blended LLM in Energy Transition Law

The University of Aberdeen’s School of Law is pleased to announce the launch of its new online LLM programme in Energy Transition Law.

Building on the success of the on campus programme, this innovative offering is designed to address the legal aspects of the global shift towards sustainable energy, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex legal landscape of energy transition.

Programme Highlights:

  • Comprehensive Curriculum: The programme covers critical areas including international energy law, renewable energy law and policy, climate change law, and the legal frameworks governing the transition from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy sources.
  • Flexibility: Designed for working professionals, the programme offers a flexible online learning environment that allows students to balance their studies with professional and personal commitments.
  • Expert Faculty: Courses are taught by leading experts in the field, ensuring that students receive cutting-edge knowledge and insights into the evolving sector of energy transition and decarbonisation.
  • Global Perspective: The programme emphasises international and comparative law, preparing graduates to operate in a global context and address international legal challenges in the energy sector.
  • Two Study Routes: Students can choose between two study paths. The first is the traditional Dissertation route, where students complete the entire programme online. The second option is the Professional Skills route, which offers a blended approach. Instead of writing a dissertation, students attend an on-campus summer school for 2-3 weeks, where they acquire sought-after industry skills to enhance their professional careers.

Dr Daria Shapovalova, Senior Lecturer in Energy Law and Programme Coordinator said: “We are excited to offer this new Master's programme, which aligns with our commitment to sustainability and innovation in education. The energy transition is one of the most significant challenges of our time, and this programme aims to prepare legal professionals who can contribute to shaping the future of energy law.”

Rankings:  The School of Law is ranked Top 10 for LLM Energy Law 2024 by LLM Guide, ranked in the Top Five Most Sought-After Law Schools in the UK 2023/24, according to Postgraduate Solutions Ltd, and ranked Top 10 for Law by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024.

Career Opportunities: According to the Graduate Outcomes Survey 2023, an impressive 94.8% of the School’s law graduates have secured employment or pursued further studies within 15 months of graduation. Graduates of this programme will be well-positioned for careers in international law firms, energy companies, government agencies, and non-governmental organisations involved in energy policy and regulation. Their comprehensive understanding of both the legal and technical aspects of energy transition will make them valuable assets in their respective fields, ensuring they are highly sought after in the job market.

About the University of Aberdeen: Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is one of the UK’s oldest universities, known for its rich history and commitment to academic excellence. The School of Law is renowned for its research and teaching in energy law, making it a fitting home for this pioneering online programme.
