Dr Muinzer interviewed for Times Radio Breakfast to discuss his work on cultural property law

Dr Thomas L Muinzer (Co-Director, Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law @School of Law, University of Aberdeen), was interviewed by Aasmah Mir and Luke Jones, for Times Radio Breakfast this morning (1/6/23).

The discussion concerned his work in the area of cultural property law, on the day of the 240th anniversary of the death of Charles Byrne, ‘The Irish Giant’ (1781-1783), whose huge corpse was stolen by body snatchers in the pay of eminent surgeon John Hunter on the the way to his funeral, and then put on display for over 200 years.

Byrne died in tragic circumstances at the age of 22 in London. Muinzer and other researchers and campaigners have recently successfully compelled the Hunterian Museum in London to withdraw Charles’ skeleton from display. Times Breakfast discussed all this and more, on the day of the 240th anniversary of Charles’ death.

Some of Thomas’s research on the subject can be read here:

Paper: A Grave Situation: An Examination of the Legal Issues Raised by the Life and Death of Charles Byrne, the 'Irish Giant'

Thomas has also been interviewed by Laura Grant on of the University of Aberdeen’s “Into the Headlines” podcast - see Episode 1, “The Irish Giant
