Dr Daria Shapovalova has been awarded a British Academy Small Research grant to conduct research in her project ‘Cold Connections: The Socio-Legal Natures of Submarine Cable Infrastructures in the Arctic’. The project will study legal frameworks and socio-legal ramifications of the construction, implementation and use of submarine internet cable infrastructure in the Arctic. The funding will be used to conduct a 2-weeks long fieldwork in Greenland, interviewing the local population and the relevant stakeholders on the recent construction of cable connecting remote settlements to high speed internet. For this project, Daria collaborates with Dr Roger Norum, lecturer in anthropology at the University of Oulu (Finland). Bringing interdisciplinary perspectives together – from law and anthropology – the project examines this topic in the context of important emerging debates about land sovereignty, public participation, indigenous rights, and new materialism.
