The event was hosted by the School of Law at the University of Lorraine, Nancy on June 15th.
Dr Irène Couzigou participated in a conference on the United Nations Security Council and Respect for Human Rights organised by the Law School of the University of Lorraine, in Nancy. She was the only academic invited from abroad.
Dr Couzigou argued that the Security Council must respect human rights enshrined in those human rights treaties drawn up under the United Nations' auspices and in customary international law. It can however derogate from them when it is necessary for the success of its peace-keeping action. Thus, Dr Couzigou explained that the Security Council is limited only to a small extent by international human rights standards when taking enforcement action to maintain or restore international peace and security.
